About Karen Callejo
Karen Callejo is an experienced Civil Trial Lawyer and former Traffic Hearing Officer for the Eleventh Judicial Circuit in Miami-Dade County, Florida. She has lived in South Florida for most of her life, and attended all local schools. Karen is a graduate of Nova Southeastern University law school (1996) and Florida International University (B.A., 1992).
As a civil trial lawyer, Karen has gained extensive and invaluable courtroom experience in state, federal, and administrative courts. She has represented a broad range of clients in both the public and private sectors and has represented both plaintiffs and defendants. Early on in her career, she represented immigrants seeking to avoid deportation and legalize their status in the United States. She then transitioned to representing the Florida Department of Children & Families in dependency and termination of parental rights trials.
Afterward, she worked for 12 years as an Assistant City Attorney for the City of Hialeah, which is the second-largest municipality in Miami-Dade County. She defended the City in lawsuits involving personal injuries and workers’ compensation claims. After her tenure with the City, Karen worked for a well-known Miami insurance defense firm handling all types of personal injury and general litigation claims. Her skills as a trial lawyer soon caught the firm’s attention, and she was promoted to Junior Partner in a little over a year. Most recently, Karen transitioned into private practice, representing injured Floridians in personal injury and workers’ compensation claims and lawsuits.
In addition to her experience in the courtroom as a trial lawyer, Karen also has experience adjudicating cases as a Traffic Hearing Officer. To become a hearing officer, she attended a week-long training course where she studied every aspect of Florida traffic laws and defenses, observed other traffic hearing officers conducting actual traffic hearings, rode along with a police officer for a day, and engaged in simulated traffic hearings. In her three years as a Traffic Hearing Officer, Karen has adjudicated tens of thousands of cases involving all types of civil traffic violations.
